This Week in Austin | Built By Snow, Sleepercar, Portugal. The Man

There are good roadshows and local shows alike this week. Built By Snow is a local favorite who are very reminiscent of early Weezer/ The Rentals. Fitting then, that they are playing with Calamity Magnet, with features Sarah Radle, formerly of Rentals fame.
At The Drive-In/Sparta veteran Jim Ward is bringing his new project, Sleepercar, to Emo’s on Wednesday. It seems to be an Emo’s themed week, because on Friday there is yet another good show featuring Wasilla, AK natives Portugal. The Man.
Saturday I’ll be in New Braunfels, seeing Ghostland Observatory play WhiteWater. If you didn’t get your hands on a …read more

Girl in a Coma at Pachanga Fest this Saturday

Girl in a Coma at Pachanga Fest this Saturday

The first annual Pachanga Festival will be held this Saturday at Waterloo Park. Headliners include Vallejo, Grupo Fantasma, Maneja Beto and many more. I’m most excited to see San Antonio natives Girl in a Coma.
As if being signed to Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records wasn’t enough, the Girls are fresh off a solid year of touring which saw them opening for Morrissey in Europe. I should also mention that they play Austin regularly, including SXSW 2007 and 2008. After Pachanga Fest, Girl in a Coma is performing at the Oklahoma City stop on Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Tour.
It’s fairly obvious that …read more

SXSW Spotlight : Austin

SXSW Spotlight : Austin

SXSW is a truly amazing time to live in Austin. Bands from across the nation and the globe converge on our fair city and make it THE place to be in mid-March. I’ve got a list of 50 or so bands that I’m planning on seeing during the festival, a good number of whom are Austin-based musicians chosen for a SXSW showcase. Here’s a sampling of some of the best Austin has to offer at SXSW on Wednesday 3/12.
