Local psych rock outfit The Boxing Lesson covered psych rock pioneers Jefferson Airplane at their February 26th show at Stubb’s. The Boxing Lesson’s version of White Rabbit is good and worthy of a listen, but Grace Slick & Co. still hold the title in my opinion. Though The Boxing Lesson do pay fitting homage to the original, there is just no matching Grace Slick’s unique vocal stylings.

The Boxing Lesson cover Jefferson Airplane, ‘Brighter’ video teaser

 By now, I’m sure you’ve downloaded your copy of Austin Sound Check’s Feedback Vol 1. (hint, hint) The Boxing Lesson’s Dark Side of the Moog is the first track on Feedback, and for good reason.
This trio’s brand of modern psych rock is infectious. Ethereal, fuzzy guitars, pleading vocals and tasty electro elements all combine into a sound that will take up residence in the darkest recesses of your mind. The intro to Dark Side of the Moog is only the beginning. I also recommend Muerta, Freedom and Wild Streaks & Windy Days (which shares it’s title with their album).
