Call it metal, stoner rock, or psych, Kylesa has developed a reputation for music on the cutting edge of the metal genre. Kylesa is deservedly referred to as avant-garde and experimental.
Founding members Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants carry the Kylesa torch proudly, providing a dual vocal onslaught that is unparalleled in heavy music today. Lacuna Coil pairs lead vocalists similarly, but where Lacuna Coil is gothic and melodic, Kylesa is driving and psychedelic. Pleasants took time to answer some questions for Austin Soundcheck. This week’s list of recommended shows is metal heavy, ranging from the melodic metal styling of Amanda Lepre, to the face-melting thrash of Iron Age and the rock infused Dixie Witch and Superheavygoatass. We also have some great touring roadshows coming through this week in Wilco and ZZ Top.
My pick of the week goes to The Story Of, who are playing a 101X Homegrown Live showcase at Emo’s on Wednesday. The show is only $1 to get in. That’s a hell of a deal to see The Story Of, who are Austin’s next big thing, in my humble opinion.
