SXSW Spotlight : Austin (part four)
This is the final installment in my four part series on Austin musicians showcasing at SXSW 2008. It could have easily been twice as long, with all the talent Austin brings to the table. The impending doom of four straight days of music and mayhem downtown has forced me to abbreviate this feature. I’ll be bringing you one final preview piece, running down the list of national and international must-see acts, followed by play-by-play, beer-by-beer coverage of the festival itself. Carolyn Wonderland
Every time I recommend Carolyn Wonderland to someone, I compare her vocals and sheer passion to Janis Joplin. Now image Janis Joplin not just as a singer, but as a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, lap steel, trumpet and mandolin all with amazing proficiency. One of Austin’s most well-rounded musicians, she has achieved cult status in the underground and shows no signs of letting up.

Krum Bums
SXSW always seems a little light on the punk end of things. The good news for fans of hardcore, is that what SXSW lacks in punk quantity, it makes up for in punk quality. Krum Bums have made a name for themselves from coast to coast, touring with familiar names like The Casualties, MXPX and Bouncing Souls. I was lucky enough to catch them in San Antonio not too long ago and left with ringing ears and a sore neck, casualty of too much headbanging.

The Lemurs
Equal parts pop rock and indie defiance, The Lemurs are another Austin band who has come into their own in the last year. My Definition is in rotation on local radio, they played Fun Fun Fun Fest 2007, and then had a song licensed to NBC’s primetime hit Las Vegas. If their bevy of SXSW performances are any indication, The Lemurs are about to take off. Catch them in a small venue while you can.
