SXSW : Day Three

by Ana Wolken on March 18th, 2008

SXSW Day 3 got off to a late start, but I caught Flosstradamus opening for Santogold. Disappointing wasn’t even the right word for these two acts. Flosstradamus consisted of two guys with laptops. I saw turntables up there, but I didn’t see them used. Call me old school, but computers do not a musician make. I would have been satisfied if the turntables were used, but alas they weren’t. Seemed like expensive stage props to me. Flosstradamus played a set of remixes and heavy sampling. Good party music, to be sure, but I really hesitate to call these guys musicians.

Santogold did nothing to restore my faith in the electro genre. I was excited to see Diplo as her DJ for the set, but was quickly let down when they announced Diplo couldn’t locate her tracks on his computer. After two songs, it was apparent that Santogold was lip syncing and she let us know that he had mistakenly played the album versions of her songs with the vocals on them. So she really wasn’t singing and freely admitted it. I left shortly after, completely disappointed in one of the artists I was most excited to see at SXSW this year.

This show wasn’t a total bust, though. I did hear the quote of the weekend. From drunk guy #1 to drunk guy #2, “I need to get something to eat so I can sober up and get drunk again.”

The only other highlight worth mentioning from day 3 is Built By Snow. I reviewed their EP on my other blog. I have to say that they lived up to all my expectations. Built By Snow even covered Friends of P by The Rentals. It was the perfect cover, given all the comparisons to early Weezer.

Blogger’s Note: By now you’ve noticed the lack of pictures in this post. I’m had some SD card issues and lost all my pictures from SXSW Day Three.
