Preview: Girl in a Coma at Emo’s Fri. Sept 5
Regular readers will know that I’ve been extolling the virtues of Girl in a Coma for a while now. The all-female trio is simply incredible. Girl in a Coma is based out of San Antonio and signed to Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records. They’ve toured with The Toadies, Morrissey, The Cliks, were on Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Tour and are about to tour with Tegan & Sara.
Girl in a Coma’s music is garage punk, with Smiths and Pixies influences mixed in and even a touch of Patsy Cline-esque vocals. Lead singer Nina Diaz’s voice is powerful and unique. Once that is mixed with the precise grooves from bassist Jenn Alva and Phanie Diaz (Nina’s older sister), Girl in a Coma can’t miss. Their debut album Both Before I’m Gone has gotten rave reviews since its release in 2007. A highly anticipated followup is due out in 2009.
