Beauty Bar gets a Cease & Desist order from Kanye West

by Ana Wolken on May 13th, 2008

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you’ll recall a post on April 30th about a Kanye West Glow in the Dark Tour afterparty at Beauty Bar. The bash was being hosted by DJ Craze, Kanye’s tour DJ. Normally I’d link you to the post at this point, but at the request of Kanye West’s legal team and the management at Beauty Bar, the post has been removed.

Kanye West’s legal team contacted Beauty Bar and threatened them with legal action over the promotion of their After the Glow party. The full email I received from Beauty Bar is below, along with the original artwork I received promoting the event.

Ana, my name is B___ Im one of the owners at Beauty
Bar. We received a Cease and Desist letter from Kanye
Wests legal team regarding the Austin Soundcheck post
about the DJ Craze show last wed. 4/30. the url for
the blog post is still up and it needs to be taken
down otherwise we could be sued for falsely promoting
Kanyes name, which we never did. But they are saying
we are responsible for what your blog posted. I
REALLY appreciate you helping us out and help
promoting the event, but its causing some friction so
if you could please take it down and let me know I
would much appreciate it.
Thanks!

I’m no legal expert, but from my perspective this is absolutely heinous. Legal action was threatened a full week after the event had taken place. Aside from that, DJ Craze is Kanye’s tour DJ. There’s nothing false about promoting a show as such. Seems to be another case of Kanye West’s inflated ego.

I am also not a lawyer. It appears to me Kanye’s group did an excellent job at having the Beauty Bar do their dirty work for them. Dirty work done a week later. How strange. What Bullies.

By their logic, aren’t you essentially doing it again by posting the image?

Sounds like a load of b.s. to me. You should’ve told Beauty Bar and Kanye West to go blow.

ttrentham - They didn’t mention the image, just the blog post. Perhaps thats splitting hairs, but i guess we’ll see if this is as important two weeks after the event as it was one week after the event.

As one of the promoters of this show, I can say that we worked very closely with Craze’s mgr to make sure that we followed the guidelines. She approved all the promo we did. In my opinion this was probably brought to Kanye’s people by another venue in Austin and a liquor company who was sponsoring the “official” afterparty. As you can see on the flyer posted above, we never said this was the after party. We are just clever people who know how to create a good title for a party. (I jest…)

That being said, to my knowledge, we haven’t heard anything from BB regarding this.

I doubt Kanye even knows about this, so there’s no point throwing darts at him. Mgmt and Legal folks work on an entirely different playing field.

Hope you have a nice day,
