This Week in Austin | The Killers, Built By Snow, Follow That Bird! & More

I’ve got a ton of recommendations for you, as we begin another fine week of music here in the greatest city on Earth.  That maybe a little hyperbole, but I assure you Austin has earned it. Just look at the fine list of shows on tap this week. There’s even a couple free ones for the economically-challenged among us.

Tuesday 2/3
The Killers @ Frank Erwin Center
This week’s No Duh recommendation. The Killer’s new single Spaceman is, well… killer!

Gobi @ The Parish
Electro-rock three piece that has yet to disappoint. The (re)addition of a live drummer has made Gobi even better.

Eleven Fingered Charlie @ Emo’s
Part of the wave of good music that’s filtered up IH-35 from San Marcos. Fans of reggae/dub listen up.

Wednesday 2/4
Ben Kweller @ Waterloo Records (5pm, free in-store)
Newly transplanted Austinite who’s exploring his country roots. Check him out in this month’s INsite Magazine.

Built By Snow, Harlem and Hollywood Gossip @ Creekside Lounge
101X sure can pick ‘em for their Homegrown Live series. This one’s a must see, with three of Austin’s hottest bands playing together. Creekside Lounge may not be able to contain the energy.

Thursday 2/5
Dead Earth Politics @ Red Eyed Fly
One of the best bands in Austin’s small but infectious metal scene, these guys melt faces. Check out my review of their EP.

Oh No! Oh My, Corto Maltese and Loxsly @ Emo’s (inside, free)
Another beautiful masterpiece of a indie pop rock lineup and it’s free to boot. Why wouldn’t you go?

Friday 2/6
Johnnie Goudie (CD Release) and Suzanna Choffel @ Stubb’s (inside)
Johnnie Goudie’s new CD (El Payaso) is one of the most anticipated local releases of the year and Suzanna Choffel is the newly crowned queen of Austin indie soul.

Follow That Bird! @ Trophy’s
Think Sleater-Kinney on Red Bull with a Pixies chaser. It’s an irresistably tasty combo you won’t regret in the morning.

Saturday 2/7
The Calm Blue Sea @ Mohawk
Instrumental rock that will grab your attention and not let go. Look for big things from these guys in 2009, as their self-titled debut is starting to catch fire.

Flametrick Subs @ Beerland
Call it rockabilly or psychobilly, Flametrick Subs are not for the faint of heart. Hold on tight kids, this show is a raucous punk rock ride to hell and back.
