‘Breaking Upwards’ Film Premieres at SXSW, Soundtrack Features Indie Favorites

Austin Sound Check is first and foremost a music blog, but sometimes there are blogworthy happenings where music intersects with other creative outlets, such as film. SXSW is a prime example of this intersection, where the film Breaking Upwards will premiere.
Starring and produced by real life couple Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, Breaking Upwards chronicles the struggles of a 20-something couple exploring the bounds of their relationship in NYC. The fictional narrative is loosely based on Lister-Jones and Wein’s actual relationship.
The Breaking Upwards soundtrack was composed by Kyle Forester (Crystal Stilts, Ladybug Transistor) and features performances by Ryan Miller (Guster) and …read more

Free Girl in a Coma Show Tonight at Mohawk

Girl in a Coma is far and away one of my favorite bands right now. The all girl three piece’s mix of garage punk and riotgrrl rock is simply irresistable. If you don’t believe me, check out GIAC’s free show tonight at Mohawk.
The show is sponsored by Remezcla, MySpace Latino and our friends at SaucidoSlant. The password to get in is “peligroso”, though I’ve heard rumors that nobody will be turned away at the doors, which open at 8pm. Get there early to check out Piñata Protest and Este Vato as well.

RedGorilla Music Fest Announces 2009 Lineup

RedGorilla Music Fest is now in it’s seventh year, serving as another free alternative to SXSW. RedGorilla runs concurrently to SXSW at a variety of clubs in downtown Austin. Though most of the artists on their lineup may not be household names yet, RedGorilla has a knack for finding up and coming young talent. Past performers include Family Force 5, Dropping Daylight, and American Bang, who is currently on tour with The Pretenders.
This year’s schedule includes performances by Opus Dai,  Lukas Rossi, Flatfoot56, Green River Ordinance, Autovaughn, and Wideawake among many others. The lineup still has numerous holes in it, …read more

Video from Trail of Dead’s Waterloo Records In-Store Performance

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead played a special in-store performance at Austin’s Waterloo records on Tuesday. Not coincidentally, their new album Century of Self was released the same day.
Check out video from the performance below, which includes my favorite new track Bells of Creation and an interview with lead singer Conrad Keely. Keely talks about Austin and how the music scene has changed since Trail of Dead first came here in the early 90’s.

Thanks to Joe Gross at Austin360 for the video tip.
