This Week in Austin | Tapes n Tapes, Harlem, Shrapnel, Pompeii & More
This week is a veritable mixed bag of awesome local music for you to consume. It all starts off on Wednesday with American Graveyard, through Harlem on Thursday and a weekend filled with metal and ‘quiet’ rock alike.
Full recommendations are below for your perusal. If you happen to check out any of these shows, be sure to stop back by Austin Sound Check and let us know what you think.
Wednesday 1/28
American Graveyard @ Antone’s
Think Johnny Cash meets the Sex Pistols. Raw, gritty and good.
Thursday 1/29
Tapes n Tapes and Harlem @ The Parish
Indie rock with pop sensibility, Tapes n Tapes is paired perfectly with local opener Harlem.
The War Against Sleep @ Mohawk
Electro fused with psych rock that just can’t miss.
Friday 1/30
Core Disorder III Metal Fest @ Emo’s
Ignitor, Course of Ruin (outside) & Shrapnel, Dead Earth Politics (inside)
Shearwater and Brazos @ Mohawk
Both of these bands will move you not with volume, but with the power of good songwriting and intricate instrumentation.
One-Eyed Doll, She Craves and 6 Pack Deep @ Stubb’s
It’s going to be a raucous, high-energy night at Stubb’s. Be sure you bring your dancing shoes for 6 Pack Deep’s set.
Saturday 1/31
Tribella @ The Peacock
The new wave inspired all-girl rock trio is releasing their debut EP this weekend, with Paige Lewis opening. Look for a full blown show preview later this week.
Iron Age @ Emo’s
I’ve recommended Iron Age before and I’ll probably do it again. These guys do DIY metal proud.
Pompeii @ Lambert’s
Austin’s original ‘quiet rockers’ that will blow you away with the gentle complexity of their music, ala Death Cab.
Five Dollar Friend @ Red Eyed Fly
90’s alt. rock with a flair for the melodramatic, fans of Blue October and Canvas will enjoy this band.
