This Week in Austin | Innerpartysystem, Electric Touch, Iron Age & Pompeii

After spending the Thanksgiving holiday visiting family in St. Louis, I have to say I’ve got a greater appreciation for Austin music. The only decent shows in St. Louis over the weekend were Cowboy Mouth and a Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute band. Both of which I could see in Austin just about any given weekend.

One read through the recommendations below will leave you appreciating Austin’s diverse music scene as much as I do. Everything from electro and punk to hip-hop, metal and classic rock will be jamming in Austin this week, so go see a show or two. If you happen to check out any of these recommended shows, stop by afterwards and let us know what you think.

Wednesday 12/3
Innerpartysystem @ Emo’s
Innerpartysystem’s brand of electro rock is bass heavy and danceworthy. Rumors of a killer stage show abound.

Flatfoot56, Black Irish & Buzzkillers @ Red 7
Mohawks and cheap beer will rule this night. Drunk punk at it’s finest.

Suzanna Choffel & Rosie Flores @ Antone’s
Two of the most talented women in Austin music today, if indie soul / pop and guitar-driven rockabilly swing shouldn’t miss this one.

Thursday 12/4
Electric Touch @ Stubb’s
Brit-rock with a Texas twang, Electric Touch lit up the festival circuit this summer and shows no signs of letting up.

Squint @ Flamingo Cantina
Heartfelt pop rock at it’s finest, these Louisiana transplants are a fine addition to Austin’s indie pop scene.

Friday 12/5
Gwar @ La Zona Rosa
Total gross out metal, another must see for any true music fan. Especially if Gwar disembowels an effigy of Paris Hilton on stage again.

Arc Angels & Gary Clark Jr. @ Antone’s
The first night of a two night stand at Antone’s, this is a killer lineup for classic rock fans.

Saturday 12/6
Iron Age @ Beerland
Straight up gritty DIY metal. If you’re into the hard stuff, don’t miss this show. You’ll thank me later.

Pompeii @ Scoot Inn
Austin’s original “quiet rockers”, these guys do indie pop rock proud.

Arc Angels & Gary Clark Jr. @ Antone’s
Night two of two at Antone’s, if you’re into true guitar driven classic rock, this show should make you salivate.

You guys forgot Joe Pug at Stubb’s on Dec 5. He is my new favorite artist. I heard about him through Lefsetz letter and NPR.

he’s giving away sampler cds on his website to anyone who emails him. Hymn #101 is the best song I’ve heard in forever!

The blogger casually bashes St. Louis but reveals herself as a poor music researcher. Just because the band’s names are unfamiliar doesn’t mean they are bad. Do you assume the scene is bad in every foreign city you visit just because you don’t recognize the artist’s names? Or is Cowboy Mouth and Stevie Ray Vaughn the only two acts you enjoy?
In addition to our regular live blues and roots clubs, here are the other acts that played over Thanksgiving weekend in St. Louis. What torture each one must have been!
Smashing Pumpkins, North Mississippi Allstars, O’Death (who you just interviewed!), Warped Records rapper Prince Po, Murphy’s Law, Humanoids, The Toasters, San Francisco thrash punks Black Cobra, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Brave Combo and local favorites 7 Shot Screamers, Gravity Kills, Gentleman Auction House, Bunnygrunt, Monads, Celery, Shame Club, Fragile Porcelain Mice, Robb Steele and an all weekend ‘rock n’ roll craft show’ with live bands playing throughout.
Sorry your weekend here sucked so bad.

    @Matt Fernandes

I’m not bashing St. Louis in the least. It’s where I grew up. Love coming back for visits. In fact, I’m pretty sure if you re-read what I posted, I never said the scene was bad.

There just wasn’t anything in town that suited my varied tastes. Smashing Pumpkins are the Pumpkins in name only and hardly qualify. I did hear about the Gravity Kills show, but only after the fact. Would have loved to attend.

I’ll be flying in for the next Urge reunion ;)

understood, but i bet you could have found a fun show i always respond strongly whenever someone takes a shot at St. Louis since it seems to happen regularly. I wouldn’t pay much to see the Pumpkins, but they did manage to play the Fox Theatre…not exactly a small club for washouts. They also headlined Montreal’s Osheaga a year ago.
