Kick Starting the SXSW Rumor Mill

Every year rumors swirl around the SXSW music lineup, but the word coming through the 2009 grapevine is particularly juicy.

Although no sources are cited, this blog points to holes in the schedules of Morrissey, Billy Joel and Elton John. All three will be touring the US in March and appear to have gaps in their tour routing that would allow them to make an appearance at SXSW 2009.

I’m not going to tempt disappointment by being overly greedy, but how exciting is this rumor? I’d settle for just one or two of them playing SXSW.

Who else would you like to see at SXSW 2009?

Morrissey dates in April, so unless a Smiths reunion happens no SXSW.

    from Brooklyn Vegan:
    4/10 Dallas, TX Palladium Ballroom
4/11 Houston, TX Jesse H. Jones Hall
4/12 Austin, TX Bass Concert Hall
4/14 El Paso, TX Chavez Theater

If Billy Joel is scheduled to make an appearance, I’d totally up my efforts to find a way to make it down there again!

how can this be juicy? Billy Joel?
SXSW is about finding new music, not tired old alcoholics with DWI records. He’s the Jimmy Buffet of the NorthEast. Washed up.
wake me up when you actually have some ‘juicy’ news….

    zzzzzzzzz

I guess it’s all a matter of taste, Jasmine. SXSW is about new music, but they always throw in some well known headliners. Check yo facts!

Huh? nothing terribly exciting about ANY of those acts, particularly Billy Joel~ that would be a SXSW embarrassment. Sure, he WASn ok songwriter (30 years ago), but damn, he’s so PLAYED OUT and completely lame~ unless you are a 45 year old divorcee from Long Island.

Yeah? well most of the ‘classic’ acts that SXSW has had either a resurgence, or completely still rocks. BJ is neither. Check the facts on Billy Joel fan demographics and get back to me. they dont correlate tot he SXSW crowd- facts about what rules the marketplace.

Like I said, it’s completely a matter of taste. The SXSW Music Festival is first and foremost about appreciating music. If you can’t appreciate someone that’s won 6 Grammys, sold over 150 million albums worldwide and has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, well that’s your choice.

Celine Dion has won Grammy’s – doesn’t mean she fits with the SXSW crowd. Not to mention several SUPER Lame American Idol acts that also aspire to his suckyness… Billy Joel is a lame-o Vegas act now- face it and weep.

Dolly Parton was scheduled to headline BMI’s SXSW showcase last year. Quincy Jones is the keynote speaker for 2009. Bet you’re real upset about those too, huh?

What exactly is “the SXSW crowd”? Are you talking about indie hipsters? Have you been to SXSW? It’s so much more than that.

    Ouch! Raaar! catfight!
I have to agree Billy Joel is a pretty weird act for SX. SXSW crowd wants something a little more intriguing.
He’s like Muzak embodied in a real person.

Dolly Rocks! she has a fiery personality and belts it out better than Billy Corrigan could. I’m starting to wonder about your taste in music Ana.
Oh and Quincy is responsible for both the BEST and WORST in music history. He’s like the Al Gore of the recording industry. Hate him or love him- we still rip on him when possible.

  13. December 18th, 2008 | 5:30 pm

Guess you’ve never been to SXSW then?

I never said Dolly didn’t rock. You’re definitely making some contradictory statements though!

Huh? I go every year. You commented that I would not be happy about her on a lineup (which she never did a show) which is based on what? are you comparing BJ to Dolly? (dolly doesn’t play piano, and she didn’t beat her supermodel wife, and no DWI’s for all I know :) ) Dolly has shown she can still keep up with today’s market, BJ hasn’t ~ he’s living off of 30 year old hits and melancholy reminiscence.

Hey Ana, I just heard… (don’t pee your pants now)
Celine Dion will be making an appearance at the 2009 SXSW! yay marketing ! we love making money off the musically inept!

    kidding of course.

  16. December 19th, 2008 | 8:53 am

Like I said, it’s all a matter of taste. Obviously there’s still a market out there for Dolly Parton just like there’s still a market out there for Billy Joel. I mean a co-headlining tour with Elton John is a pretty good indication of that.

I think Billy Joel has influenced a lot of today’s musicians over the span of a very long, successful career and has earned some respect.

    Juicy News?
(sarcasm) I’m at the edge of my seat on this one. (sarcasm) the deuches willing to pay $250 for a Billy Joel ticket aren’t the same peeps forking over $250 for SX. Is anyone else excited about these acts?

    Hi there;
I’m going to SXSW for the first time to hear NEW music. Any suggestions for getting to see the acts I’m looking forward to? I know the clubs get crowded.
    Thanks.

I just put up an early list of 2009 south-by bands.

    http://covertcuriosity.blogspot.com/2008/12/sxsw-2009-bands-rumors.html

Am I pumped about the Billy Joel rumor? Not at all. But would I check it out? Sure. I’d also watch Dolly, and just about any cat fight.

  20. December 22nd, 2008 | 7:52 pm

Finally, somebody with a little sense! :)

Great list, btw. O’Death and Sage Francis are promising. It’ll be awesome to see what ends up shaking out!

You’d be surprised at the acts that play sxsw each year. some of them performers that have not done anything in a long time. While Billy Joel hasn’t belted out hits in years, he’s still a respected artist among music fans. He would be a nice addition to the festival. I’ve attended, volunteered, and worked staff sicne 95′ and can easily say he’d fit in quite nicely. I’m sure he’d most likely play a venue (as we dont’ have big venues for sxsw anyway) that would most likely accomodate his music. Probably the paramount theater downtown for it’s acoustics and setting.

Also you’d be surprised at the fans that go to see numerous bands. One minute a fan can be watching NOFX at emos, then run 10 minutes to catch Kris Kristophersen at Continental Club. I’ve seen Alkaline Trio, then ran over to the Boiling Pot to see Norah Jones. it’s not unusual.
