Show Preview | Spin Alley, Zlam Dunk & Gobi at Dirty Dog
This Saturday at Dirty Dog on 6th St., four of the finest bands from Texas will take the stage for a night that ranges from electro hip-hop, to urban rock, dance punk and punkhop. It’s a genre-bending show that you don’t want to miss. INsite Magazine is sponsoring the night, and coincidentally, I also wrote a piece on Zlam Dunk for the November issue.
Starting things off are Austinites Gobi, who fold elements of hip-hop into their two man electro show. They’ve been compared to Ghostland Observatory and rightfully so. Keep an eye out for their high-tech t-shirts that move along with Gobi’s hip-hop beats.
Next up, Joint Method brings their urban rock to Austin. The Dallas band infuses their solid rock foundation with a mix of hip-hop, reggae and latin influences that wow audiences on their frequent West Coast tours. Catch them Saturday for a rare Austin appearance.
Zlam Dunk has taken Austin by storm, winning the Red Eyed Fly’s Battle of the Bands back in September. The band is from San Marcos, formed by a group of friends who all go to Texas State. Zlam Dunk literally packs the stage with seven members, including two drummers and a mishmash of other exciting elements. They play “dunk”, the name Zlam Dunk came up with to describe their mashup of dance and punk.
Headlining the already jam packed night is Austin’s own Spin Alley. The band’s high energy fusion of punk, hip-hop and rock has taken the region by storm. Spin Alley’s 2007 debut EP Endless Threat was voted 2nd on the Statesman’s list of most anticipated new releases. First place went to Spoon’s GaGaGaGaGa, and Spin Alley beat out Ghostland Observatory who placed 3rd with Robotique Majestique. This Saturday’s show at Dirty Dog is Spin Alley’s final Austin show of 2008. They’ll return to ATX on January 16, 2009 at Stubb’s for the release of their debut full-length, Victims.
You can sample tracks from Spin Alley and Gobi on Austin Sound Check’s mixtape Feedback Vol. 1, available for free download here.
