Second Annual Maker Faire This Weekend

The New York Times summed up Maker Faire better than I could ever hope to:

“At first blush…this festival, sponsored by Make magazine, is a gathering place of pyromaniacs and noise junkies, the multiply pierced and the extensively tattooed. But wander a while, and the showy surface gives way to a wondrous thing: the gathering of folks from all walks of life who blend science, technology, craft and art to make things goofy and grand.”

Featuring arts & crafts, science & engineering, robotics, sustainable living exhibits as well as music and other DIY-related events, Maker Faire is gearing up to be one of the most exciting weekends of the year in Austin. It’s all going down at the Travis County Expo center. For more information, including ticketing visit the Maker Faire website.

Between the life-sized game of Mouse Trap and the RoboGames Texas Cup, Maker Faire also features some pretty exciting local musicians this year, over 20 in all and all within the DIY realm. I’ll be in attendance at Maker Faire this weekend, so be sure to follow me on Twitter for all the latest updates.

Foot Patrol  – electro funk / hip-hop
Foot Patrol’s sound has been called an “ode to toes” and features “Prince-like sex appeal” coupled with heavy beats and samples.

Southern Drama – experimental rock
Think gypsy jazz meets Dresden Dolls meets Vaudeville. This all girl three piece with a flair for the dramatic has taken Austin by storm.

El Tule -  Latin / salsa
El Tule is a longtime Austin favorite, featuring cumbia beats, Latin jazz, Afro-cuban, merengue and reggae among many other influences. A perfect blend for Maker Faire.
