ACL Preview | Dan Dyer’s Soul Revival

No matter how much modern rock ACL organizers put in the lineup, the festival will always be Austin music at its core. One of the first and finest acts to take the stage in the three-day auditory binge is Austinite Dan Dyer.

A working musician for two decades, Dyer has recently climbed the ranks in Austin with his fresh neo-soul that is both funky and intense. Dyer’s vocals reach a high falsetto, at times Jamiroquai-like. His overall sound is rooted in classics like Stevie Wonder with modern touches reminiscent of Citizen Cope and John Legend.

Dan Dyer’s self-titled album was released on local imprint Fat Caddy Records earlier this year, to rave reviews from local and national press alike. The Austin American-Statesman named the album one of the top 10 local releases of 2008. Visit his MySpace for a preview, including standout track Anne Marie.

If you aren’t lucky enough to be attending ACL this year, you can see Dan Dyer at Paste Magazine’s ACL Pre-Party at Emo’s on September 25th. Dan Dyer also performs regularly at Momo’s and he’ll be appearing at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans. Dan Dyer’s self-titled album is now available on iTunes and at Waterloo Records.

I’m listening to Dan Dyer RIGHT NOW. I heard the profile of him on KUT yesterday morning and was so blown away that I had to look him up, and discovered that iTunes is selling his new album right now for only six bucks! I’m not going to ACL Fest (I lost my taste for big outdoor music festivals years ago) but I’ll definitely hit his gig at Momo’s real soon before he gets too big to stay there. What a voice!
