This Week in Austin | Lots of Local Love For UT’s First Week Back

article30271.jpg

University of Texas students have long been the life-blood of the Austin music scene.  It’s no surprise then, that the return of the students (classes begin this week) has brought the best in local talent to the stage. Everything from psych/space rock to hardcore punk to electro, rockabilly, punk-hop, swampgrass, and new wave is on the menu this week.

So tempting are these offerings, that I’ll be out and about at least a couple times this week. Which shows are you looking forward to?

Wednesday 8/27
The Boxing Lesson @ Emo’s Lounge (101X Homegrown Live w/ Frontier Brothers & Living Better Electrically)
I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again. Well crafted psycho rock that packs a trippy punch. Featured on Feedback Vol 1, we’ve also got an exclusive Boxing Lesson swag giveaway here.

Thursday 8/28
Krum Bums @ Emo’s Outside (w/ GBH & Whole Wheat Bread)
Hardcore, straightforward punk. No imitations accepted, Krum Bums are the real punk deal.

Squint @ Red Eyed Fly (w/ Dented, Paperwork & Flawless Escape)
Straight up pop-rock, these Louisiana transplants know how to command a stage.

Gobi @ Elysium (w/ Happy Panjoma & Carbon Theory)
This electro duo mixes it up with tasty hip-hop and rock influences. Another band featured on Feedback Vol 1.

Electric Touch CD Release @ Stubb’s (w/ The Steps & Live Oak Decline)
An Austin-based band that’s blowing up. They’ve already played Lollapalooza. On deck: ACL & a tour with the Fratellis.

Friday 8/29
Turbo350 @ Room 710 (w/ Ghoultown, The Skeletons, The In and Outlaws)
Rockabilly with a heavy guitar rock bent, Turbo350 will draw you in with their live show. Featured on Feedback Vol 1.

Saturday 8/30
Spin Alley @ Red Eyed Fly (w/ Vulcan’s Anvil, IH-5)
They call themselves punk-hop. Punk, hip-hop, screamo and rock combine for a fresh sound you won’t hear anywhere else. A must see, also featured on Feedback Vol 1.

Scott H. Biram @ Room 710 (w/ John Schooley & His One Man Band, Shootin’ Pains, The Stick Wigglies)
I’ve heard Biram accurately described as swampgrass. Dirty, muddy rock-influenced bluegrass that sounds fresh out of the deep south.

Car Stereo (Wars) @ Beauty Bar
Austin’s version of Girl Talk. It’s not unique, but its fun party music for those times when all you want to do is dance.

The Black & White Years @ Stubb’s
Strikingly new wave influenced, it’s no surprise these guys were discovered and subsequently produced by a member of Talking Heads.

Sunday 8/31
Muchos Backflips @ Trophy’s (w/ iD, Code Named Code & The Bread)
These guys know how to rock the stage, eclectic indie style.
