Interview with In This Moment’s Maria Brink

I recently interviewed In This Moment frontwoman Maria Brink for an article in InSite Magazine. The issue hits stands this week, but in the meantime, I’ve got a couple choice excerpts for you after the jump.

Maria shared her thoughts on what it’s like being a woman fronting a metal band and how MySpace, satellite radio and other new media helped In This Moment get where they are today.

You can see In This Moment on Thursday at Red 7 along with Devildriver, Pinhead and Within Chaos.

What is it like being a woman fronting a metal band?

I don’t ever really look at it like that. I can’t really tell you what it is to feel like a man in front of a crowd. So I can only come from my point of view and I don’t feel like it’s a bad thing at all. I take it as a positive thing and go do my thing. I don’t let myself get intimidated by whether or not somebody is going to think I’m rough enough or tough enough for them because I’m a woman. I don’t even think about that. I do what I do and go with my heart and go out there and do my thing. I’ve had to deal with rough crowds once in a while, but I don’t think that’s because I’m a woman.

I think it’s because crowds can be hard and crazy. When we opened up for Megadeth, that was the hardest crowd. But the band before us had a male singer and it was hard for them. The whole crowd had this attitude of, “You better impress us.” But by the end of the show, it wound up perfect. We won them over by the third song. It was great and the crowd starts to go crazy. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with me being a woman.

Maybe there were a few attitudes out there, because I wear cutesy little dresses. In the end it’s just about the music. It’s about whats coming out of your mouth and what the music sounds like.

You’ve built up your fanbase through MySpace and satellite radio. What is your take on the music industry today?

I think it takes a lot of work from the band itself, along with the label you’re involved with. Bands have to really get out there and get themselves setup. Start touring on their own. You can get your name out there through MySpace and tour across the nation and the globe off that. When labels see bands working hard they get interested. Bands really have to work independently too.
