Politics and Music | Flobots & Portugal. The Man

Politics and Music | Flobots & Portugal. The Man

It’s almost impossible to escape political talk today. Thankfully this isn’t a political blog, because I don’t have the energy to keep debating it all. However, for my politically-minded readers there are a couple items I’d like to call to your attention in closing out this week…
Flobots will be performing at Batfest in Austin on Sunday night. Fresh from their recent performance at a protest at the DNC in Denver. Don’t forget that this year’s Batfest has been moved to the First St. Bridge.

Senator McCain’s VP pick, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, is from Wasilla, AK. Wasilla also happens to …read more

ACL Preview | Slightly Stoopid Might Be Smarter Than You Think

ACL Preview | Slightly Stoopid Might Be Smarter Than You Think

Discovered by Sublime’s Bradley Nowell in 1995, Slightly Stoopid’s mix of reggae, dub and punk has drawn large audiences across the country and across the globe.
The band has long been making a name for themselves through non-traditional channels that are now being adopted by the rest of the indie music industry. They’ve never relied on radio play or MTV for their exposure. Instead, Slightly Stoopid has built their audience through consistent touring, word of mouth and regular releases of new material.
Slightly Stoopid’s newest release Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid continues the band’s steady work ethic. Mainly …read more

Haunting Oboe Music | Prolific is an Understatement

Haunting Oboe Music | Prolific is an Understatement

I’ve actually had my copies of the Haunting Oboe Music EPs for a while now, but have been pondering what exactly I’d write about this massive body of work. When a band drops six EPs in your lap (the total has since grown to seven), the task of writing about them all at once has proven to be daunting. Although I’d imagine that’s similar to what Haunting Oboe Music felt when they announced their ambitious plan to release one EP per month for the entirety of 2008.
The quality of musicianship is very high on these EPs. HOM is exploring the …read more

New White Denim Video ‘Shake Shake Shake’

Homegrown garage rock phenoms White Denim have released a new video for their song Shake Shake Shake. Looks like some good clean fun in a junkyard. Do I detect a Jessica Simpson burn?

Austin City Limits Festival | Don’t Listen to the Naysayers

Austin City Limits Festival | Don’t Listen to the Naysayers

Exactly one month from today, the Austin City Limits festival will kickoff at Zilker Park here in Austin. This year’s lineup has gotten mixed reviews across the blogosphere, however I still maintain that this is an excellent lineup. You just have to get past some of the headliners.
Alison Krauss & Robert Plant. Really? I couldn’t be any less excited. Then there’s the Foo Fighters, who I would have been ecstatic about a decade ago. They’ve become a shining example of everything bad in the music industry today. The Foo Fighters are overplayed, overproduced and just generally overexposed. I might still …read more

This Week in Austin | Lots of Local Love For UT’s First Week Back

This Week in Austin | Lots of Local Love For UT’s First Week Back

University of Texas students have long been the life-blood of the Austin music scene.  It’s no surprise then, that the return of the students (classes begin this week) has brought the best in local talent to the stage. Everything from psych/space rock to hardcore punk to electro, rockabilly, punk-hop, swampgrass, and new wave is on the menu this week.
So tempting are these offerings, that I’ll be out and about at least a couple times this week. Which shows are you looking forward to?

Austin Soundcheck on Facebook

I’m a MySpace girl from way back. I was on MySpace before they had band profiles, if you can believe it. It seems all the kids are into Facebook these days, and I have to admit it’s got some cool features. The Blog Network app is pretty decent!
Click below to visit Austin Soundcheck on Facebook. I’ll love you long time.
