My Chemical Romance : Arenas vs Smaller Venues

I saw My Chemical Romance play the AT&T Center in San Antonio last year, but only because Muse opened for them. Austin360 posted a review of the My Chemical Romance show at Stubb’s last night, that brought up some interesting thoughts about arenas versus smaller venues.

When I saw them at AT&T Center, it was a true arena show, down to the pyrotechnics, confetti and rotating drum riser. I’m not all that enamored with My Chemical Romance, but with all the activity on stage it was hard not to be entertained. I don’t know that I would have necessarily been interested in going to their more stripped down set at Stubb’s. Judging by the review all the theatrics and stage sets that held the audiences attention in the arena were not present at Stubb’s, a much smaller venue. A set in a smaller venue would then thereby force you to focus more on the music, right?

Here’s a video of My Chemical Romance’s 2007 arena show, complete with fire.

I prefer mid-level to smaller clubs over arenas. With an occasional summer festival thrown in for good measure. What do you think? Arenas or clubs?
