My Chemical Romance : Arenas vs Smaller Venues

My Chemical Romance : Arenas vs Smaller Venues

I saw My Chemical Romance play the AT&T Center in San Antonio last year, but only because Muse opened for them. Austin360 posted a review of the My Chemical Romance show at Stubb’s last night, that brought up some interesting thoughts about arenas versus smaller venues.
When I saw them at AT&T Center, it was a true arena show, down to the pyrotechnics, confetti and rotating drum riser. I’m not all that enamored with My Chemical Romance, but with all the activity on stage it was hard not to be entertained. I don’t know that I would have necessarily been interested …read more

Dethklok Tour Dates

Dethklok Tour Dates

There’s only one thing I can think of that is better than a satirical cartoon about a fake metal band. That one thing would be a tour by that very band. Adult Swim’s Dethklok is coming to Austin this summer and as starved as this town is for good metal, I predict a sellout. This is the first time I can remember that a decent metal tour has come here and not gone to San Antonio.
With Chimaira and Soilent Green rounding out the lineup, I don’t think La Zona Rosa will ever be the same. If you’re not sure how …read more

Full Service at Austin Reggae Fest, Taking over on 311, Snoop Dogg Tour

Full Service at Austin Reggae Fest, Taking over on 311, Snoop Dogg Tour

I’ll tell you right off the bat, I’m a long-time fan of Full Service. I’ve been seeing these crunchy rockers since their dreads were shorter and their tans were lighter.
Don’t be fooled though. They can slay with the best of them, even bringing out a killer Mastodon cover from time to time. I’d compare Full Service to a Sublime or a Slightly Stoopid, but listen to Battleship or Single Note Slayer live and you’ll be hooked for life. They played at Austin Reggae Fest last weekend. Check out the video highlights below. (Ed Note: Hi-Ho rules! It starts at …read more

Update on The Backyard: Proposed Relocation

Update on The Backyard: Proposed Relocation

A follow-up to yesterday’s post on The Backyard’s closure due to new development in the area.
It seems there are plans in the works to relocate the venue to a larger property farther down Hwy 71, which would encompass enough land to allow ample parking and prevent developers from encroaching again.
It’s unclear if these plans mean the crisis is averted. Austin’s music fans will be eagerly awaiting an announcement of a confirmed relocation.

Development forces The Backyard to close

Development forces The Backyard to close

Austin has the most live music venues per capita of any city in the world. Losing one won’t change that, but continued overdevelopment probably will. The Backyard is joining Armadillo World Headquarters, Liberty Lunch and Back Room among the ranks of live music venues forced out by developers. This summer will be the last at the venue’s current location. The Backyard is reportedly seeking a new location in the same area, but management has not announced any confirmed plans.
The Backyard is nestled among the trees in what used to be rural Bee Caves, just outside Austin. In 2006, The Galleria …read more

Portugal The Man summer tour

Portugal The Man summer tour

Alaska isn’t the first place you’d look for a good soulful indie rock band. Alaska is also a pretty good drive away from Austin. Wasilla’s own Portugal The Man trekked to SXSW this year with their fuzzed out guitars and gigged till they dropped. Portugal The Man was impressively on the schedule at least 3-4 times by my count, playing an official SXSW showcase as well as several day parties.
If you weren’t lucky enough to catch Portugal The Man back in March, they are returning to Austin on Friday, 7/18 as part of their summer tour. RX Bandits and Facing …read more

Dynamite Boy reignites this weekend

Dynamite Boy reignites this weekend

Dynamite Boy was one of Austin’s top bands when they broke up in 2005. Signed to Fearless Records, they called it quits after a decade of making fun pop-punk together. Their cover of AC/DC’s TNT is one of my favorite covers to this day, rivaled closely by Dynamite Boy’s rendition of I Want it That Way by The Backstreet Boys.
Not only are they reuniting for a show this Saturday at Emo’s, but Dynamite Boy is also releasing a digital-only album entitled Time Flies. Details are sketchy right now, as the band only has one show on their calendar, but rumor …read more
