The Grind: Alt Rock & Extreme Sports in Downtown Austin

The Grind is an annual event put on each year by Roadway Productions, the company responsible for other events like ROT Biker Rally and Batfest. The Grind features some of the best in alt rock talent alongside wakeboarding, skateboarding and street biking demonstrations.
The Grind 2008 is this Sunday, April 6th and features music from Mickey Avalon, Eve6 and San Antonio-based Girl in a Coma, among others. Although they aren’t from Austin, San Antonio is just a short drive down 35 and we’re lucky enough to see Girl in a Coma fairly regularly as they rise through the ranks. Signed …read more

M.I.A. returns to Austin

Any readers who are familiar with my other blog will know that I am a huge fan of M.I.A. Her performance at UT’s Hogg Auditorium was one of my highlights of 2007.
It is an understatement to say I was surprised to see a handful of US tour dates on a just-announced presale. Needless to say, I will be seeing you there…

The Boxing Lesson – Wild Streaks & Windy Days

The Boxing Lesson – Wild Streaks & Windy Days

Imagine Pink Floyd got together with Shiny Toy Guns and produced an indie-rock love child. That love child would be called The Boxing Lesson.
The Boxing Lesson is an Austin-based three piece, consisting of Paul Waclawsky, Jaylinn Davidson and Jake Mitchell. Formed by Waclawsky after moving to Austin from L.A. the band has built a solid reputation in town, gigging at venues like Emo’s, The Parish and Beauty Bar. Their brand of pychedelic electro-pop is definitely familiar, but also progressive and innovative, mixing Waclawsky’s vocals with Davidson’s backing harmonies. The psychedelic elements could very easily fit into an acid rock band, …read more

This Week in Austin

Austin is back in the swing of things, as the post-SXSW hangover has worn off. Gobi & Firekills are both excellent if you are looking for some weeknight entertainment. Also notable are the Krum Bums and Grady shows on Saturday night, both of whom showcased at SXSW this year. Matson Belle (pictured at right) is also a fantastic show, though I can’t personally vouch for their acoustic set.

Thursday 3/27

Best Concert Ever – Blue October

Best Concert Ever – Blue October

So, this month the b5 Music Channel bloggers decided to write about our most favorite concert. This was definitely not an easy choice. I decided to go with Blue October at La Zona Rosa (Austin) in 2003.
Blue October’s show sticks out from the hundreds of live shows that I’ve been to, for one reason. The passion in the music was equally matched by the energy of the crowd that night.
La Zona Rosa was sold out. It was cramped and hot. The line for drinks was incredibly long. Yet, despite all that, once Blue October took the stage, they were …read more
